Welcome to the United Nations Joint Programme e-Newsletter

Our quarterly newsletter provides our programme partners and the general public with detailed information on the progress of the Joint Programme. 

The Joint programme is a unique effort to provide better opportunities for women and girls in Turkey by building service capacity for local governments and enhancing collaboration between NGOs and government authorities.

 

Did you know...

  • 1923 -  With the proclamation of the Republic, women gained more civil rights.
  • 1926 -  New civil code giving more equal rights with men adopted.
  • 1930 - Municipality law allowing women to run for the local elections legislated.
  • 1934 -  Women were granted the right to vote.
  • 1935 - 17 women entered the parliament.
  • 1950 - Ms Müfide İlhan was elected as the first female mayor (Mersin).
  • 1966 - Turkish parliament approved ILO convention of equal pay for equal work.
  • 1977 - Türkan Akyol became the first female Member of the Turkish Cabinet.
  • 1985 -  Turkish parliament approved CEDAW.
  • 1991 - Lale Aytaman became the first female governor (Muğla) in Turkey.
  • 1993 - First female Prime Minister Tansu Çiller established her cabinet.
  • 1998 -  Law on Protection of the Family legislated.
  • 2002 -  New Civil Code went into force.
  • 2003 -  Law on Family Court was legis-lated by the parliament.
  • 2003 - New Labour Law was legislated by the parliament.
  • 2003 - Women’s perspective added to the Citizenship Law.
  • 2004 - Circular to eliminate gender discrimination in employment released.
  • 2004 - Constitutional amendment strengthened gender equality.
  • 2005 -  New Criminal  Code went into force.
  • 2005 - Municipality Law legislated.
